Portland police are reminding parents and students at Reiche Elementary School to be vigilant after reports that a suspicious man with a dog tried to coax a child away from the school this week.

Police were called to the school at 9:11 a.m. Wednesday after a parent saw the man talking with a student just off school property.

“The man was heard trying to coax the student away from the area, saying he needed help with his dog,” according to a press release. “The student refused and ran inside of the school. The man realized the alert parent was watching and quickly walked away and was not located by police.”

School officials say the man may have been near the school on Tuesday afternoon as well. Police and school officials are stepping up their presence at the school, police said.

Parents are encouraged to drop off students on school property and to remind their children to use caution around adults they don’t know.

The suspect is described as a white male, who is tall and thin, scruffy-looking, in his 30s and wearing a black beanie. The dog is gray and medium-sized with white spots.

They were last seen in the area of Pine and Brackett streets.
