Fast-food lovers of the future will no longer use self-serve soda machines at McDonald’s as part of the restaurant chain’s future technology plans.

Free refills will someday be a thing of the past, with the change rolling out over the next 10 years while new U.S. locations open or existing ones are remodeled.

The company said the move will keep the in-store experience consistent for customers as well as workers.

Removing the soda machines is part of a larger technology plan for the Golden Arches as customers dine in less often and increase their use of delivery — and the company continues to focus on the McDonald’s app and draw customers to it.

McDonald’s previously announced it planned for restaurants to have smaller or even no dining area in response to changing consumer habits brought about during the pandemic. Some restaurants may even become take-out only.

The company is also updating its drive-thru experience with an aim on speedier service (currently being tested out at a location in Texas) that has a dedicated lane for customers who ordered ahead, shelves inside for those same customers, a waiting room for delivery workers and a conveyor belt that rolls orders out the window right into driver’s hands. Customers who do venture inside order through digital kiosks.

Mickey D’s isn’t alone in overhauling its operations as part of an industry-wide trend.

In Minnesota, Taco Bell is testing out the “Gravity-Defying Restaurant,” which has four drive-thru lanes with three dedicated to mobile order pickups.

Subway, meanwhile, has begun rolling out “Grab & Go” vending machines for customers looking for an even faster experience.
